France secured an important 3-1 victory over Senegal in their FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter, thanks to a late surge led by captain Kylian Mbappé.

The match proved to be far more competitive than many expected, with Senegal matching the defending European giants for long periods before France’s quality ultimately made the difference in the closing stages.

The opening half was a tightly contested affair, with both sides creating chances but failing to find a breakthrough. Senegal showed great discipline defensively and looked dangerous on the counterattack, while France struggled to convert possession into clear opportunities.

After a goalless first half, the deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute when Kylian Mbappé produced a moment of quality to put France ahead. The forward finished clinically to give Les Bleus a crucial lead and ease the pressure on his side.

France continued to push forward and doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute through Bradley Barcola. The winger capped off an impressive attacking move, putting the French in a commanding position with less than ten minutes remaining.

As the match entered stoppage time, Senegal refused to give up. Their persistence was rewarded in the 90+5th minute when Ibrahim Mbaye found the back of the net, giving the African side hope of a dramatic comeback.

However, those hopes lasted only moments.

Just one minute later, Mbappé struck again in the 90+6th minute, restoring France’s two-goal advantage and sealing all three points for Didier Deschamps’ men.

The victory gives France a strong start in their World Cup campaign and highlights the importance of Mbappé, who once again delivered when his team needed him most. Senegal, meanwhile, will take positives from their spirited performance despite the defeat and remain capable of challenging for qualification in the matches ahead.
