Chelsea Drop Points at Liverpool as Bompastor Voices Frustration Despite Unbeaten Streak

Chelsea Women extended their remarkable unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League to 34 matches, but the mood after their 1–1 draw against Liverpool was anything but celebratory. The league holders took an early lead but struggled to maintain control, leaving head coach Sonia Bompastor openly dissatisfied with both the performance and the missed opportunity in the title race.
Chelsea Start Brightly but Lose Their Rhythm
Chelsea began the match with confidence, taking the lead inside the opening ten minutes when Alyssa Thompson produced a brilliant curling finish into the far corner. The goal seemed to set the pace for what could have been a dominant outing, but Liverpool responded with determination and discipline.
Liverpool equalised shortly after the half-hour mark. Beata Olsson broke away on a swift counterattack, showing composure to slot home the leveller. The goal visibly unsettled Chelsea, who struggled to regain their intensity and allow the match to drift away from their control.
Chelsea pushed hard in the second half and even had a goal from Aggie Beever-Jones ruled out. Several other near chances followed, but the champions could not find the breakthrough that would have restored their lead.
A Record Broken — but Concerns Remain
The draw saw Chelsea set a new record for the longest unbeaten run in WSL history. Yet despite the milestone, they remain three points behind Manchester City in the league standings. With the season approaching a crucial stage, every point matters — and this result felt more like two dropped than one gained.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will be encouraged by the result. Even though their league position remains precarious, taking points off the defending champions is a major positive in their fight for survival.
Bompastor: “This Wasn’t Good Enough”
After the match, Sonia Bompastor made her disappointment clear. She acknowledged that her team did not meet their usual standards, especially in the way they defended and built up play.
She criticised the lack of defensive sharpness leading to Liverpool’s goal and expressed frustration with the team’s decision-making in attack. Poorly timed runs, offside movements, and hesitations in the final third were among the issues she highlighted.
Bompastor also addressed her decision to rotate the squad, noting that the team had a demanding away trip in the Champions League earlier in the week. Although she defended the need to manage player workload, she admitted the changes did not produce the fluidity or control she expected.
Looking Ahead: A Crucial Period for Chelsea
The draw adds further pressure as Chelsea prepare for a tough Champions League clash against Barcelona. With matches coming in quick succession, the team’s depth will be severely tested.
Bompastor’s message was clear: Chelsea may be unbeaten, but they are not playing at the level required to achieve their long-term goals. The performance in Liverpool serves as both a warning and a wake-up call.
